Since October 1st, 2000, the cooperative resumed its micro-credit activities in the field of education.

The program consists in granting loans, while providing training in health care and nutrition sectors to the poor and especially to women from rural communities.

198 groups of women have already been created. They were trained to administrative and commercial management. December 2003, the total amount of outstanding loans was US$ 197 900.

Poor women represent 87% of the borrowers. An educator goes from one village to another and teaches groups of women about health care and nutrition. The purpose of the training is to help women to better use the income they get from the business they launched thanks to the micro credit.

Today 13 persons work for the cooparative (12 full time, 1 part time): an executive manager, an administrative and finance manager, a chartered accountant, 4 people in charge of the loans, 1 educator for the savings, 2 educators  for health and nutrition education, 1 guard,  a process server and a cashier.

In February 2001, Coopec organised in collaboration with the NGO Dias of Bukavu a training session for the managers and the workers of the Coopec branches : administrative management, credit management, control inside the company, accounting and human resources.
In 2003: training for  the credit agents in Nairobi, in 2004 introduction of a savings and credit management software.

Amongst the projects financed by the co-operative we have

  • building of 25 houses for sticken population after the flood
  • distribution of seeds and tools to displaced people (war)

The loan budget still can't meet the number of demand for loans. Any kind of help or collaboration is welcome...
