Background

Tallaght Trust Fund Ltd was set up in 1987 to promote economic development and enterprise in the Tallaght area.

The closure of a significant business in the Tallaght area led, in 1997, to Tallaght Trust Fund administering a small loan fund aimed specifically at former workers of this company who wanted to set up their own businesses.

The Fund also works closely with First Step, another organisation that provides loans for small business start ups and the South Dublin County Enterprise Board, which provides grant assistance for new and developing businesses.

In addition to its social finance work Tallaght Trust Fund also helps clients with general business support and practical advice.

Key numbers

In the year ending December 1997, the board approved 34 applications for loans. Currently, capital stands at EUR 144,000, with loan sizes ranging from EUR 125 to EUR 6,350.

It also administers a worker co-operative revolving loan fund aimed at worker co-operatives on a national basis, who may have difficulty in accessing finance on similar terms to other small businesses, because of the legal structure of co-operatives. Loans for this range from EUR 650 to EUR 63,500.
